Transforming the Perception of Public Housing
The Rochester Housing Authority (RHA) is on a mission to “Change the Face of Public Housing,” and Edge is proud to partner with them on this transformative effort. At the corner of Bond and Hamilton, a once-overlooked apartment complex is undergoing a dramatic redesign. What was once an unmistakable symbol of affordable housing is being revitalized to better integrate with the neighborhood and provide residents with a sense of belonging.
"This reflects our continuing commitment to changing the face of public housing," said Shawn Burr, executive director of Rochester Housing Authority. "Just because it is public housing doesn't mean it has to look like public housing."
The redesigned multi-family building has been thoughtfully proportioned and styled to harmonize with the surrounding area. Key design improvements include:
Varied rooflines and architectural details reflecting the character of nearby homes.
Adjusted building setbacks to align with the neighborhood streetscape.
Matching facade treatments and defined entries that echo neighboring residences.
Diverse colors and textures for visual interest and warmth.
Landscaping enhancements to soften the building’s appearance and foster a welcoming atmosphere.
Well-defined porches to create a sense of home and connection.
During the ribbon cutting on October 21, Mayor Malik Evans (who grew up in the neighborhood) commented: “Projects like RHA’s Bond Hamilton Townhouses symbolize our commitment to creating quality, affordable homes that can help break the cycle of poverty. This development will provide housing stability for families, creating a foundation for future generations to grow and thrive. Thanks to the dedication of the City’s Housing Team, RHA, and our many housing partners, Rochester is building toward a prosperous future for all.”
